Sure, a fishing trip for the men in your church is a great idea, but what kind of fishing are we talking? Don’t worry. Here’s the Ucluelet, BC season-overview for salmon and halibut fishing 2009.

Fishing was good all through May and we limited out most days with nice Chinook. Actually, it is unusual to get so many larger Chinooks this early in the season. We expect the same for next year based on the Department of Fisheries and Oceans–Canada forecasts. Not many halibut were around, but we usually were still able to catch our limit.

Chinook fishing continued to be very strong, especially for the larger Chinook. Halibut fishing picked up a little but was not as good as years past. Chinook fishing was so good, though, it made up for the slow halibut, and our customers kept very excited. Coho fishing started slow, but picked up as the month went on.

By mid-to-late July we were getting large tubs full 15-40 lb. Chinook. This was exceptional. Coho fishing was also exceptional. We haven’t seen this many Coho here for about 5 years. It was hard to even get your line down without gettting a Coho on.

Exceptional Chinook salmon fishing until late August. Coho fishing was much better than usual during most of the month. Halibut fishing picked up in a big way and we were usually limited out in a short time.

Coho fishing was still very strong. Chinook fishing started to get slower, though we were still catching feeder Chinook. Halibut fishing continued to be strong until Mid September.

Overall, it was a great season for salmon. On average, people hooked between 20-50 salmon each day, and we brought in our limit often. A lot of our visitors brought home upwards of 50 lbs. of filets per person! Not only were the salmon plentiful, they were larger than the last several years. This year, by July we were catching Chinook weighing up near 40 lbs. Halibut was slower than years past, but we still caught the limit on most days. For more information on the season, read the month-by-month descriptions below, or visit our fishing reports.
